Demonstration with Chris Forsey

Chris Forsey's Demonstration in Acrylics and Acrylic Inks: Saturday 21st June

Despite the possible deterrent of very hot weather, we were pleased to welcome around thirty members to the Annual General Meeting of our Society, followed by a demonstration by one of our most popular artists: Chris Forsey.

With the business of the AGM satisfactorily concluded, we settled down to be entertained and educated by Chris. He did not disappoint!

Chris's chosen subject was a charming harbour scene in Dittisham, which is on the Dart Estuary in Devon. We were interested to learn that both the Dimbleby brothers and Agatha Christie were residents at one time.

Chris began his work with a ground colour in yellow ochre over which was a lightly drawn pencil sketch. He used acrylic ink to place darks on the canvas. Midtones and large areas such as sky and water followed. Chris use acrylic medium to aid the flow of the paint and create coloured glazes in places.

And then the magic started to happen as Chris put in highlights and adjustments. All of a sudden, the weight of the waves and the warm glow of the evening sunshine could be felt. Chris chose to use white acrylic ink, mixed with a little yellow ochre, to create foam on the

waves. Undiluted white ink was used to create tiny highlighted areas, Chris explaining that he found acrylic ink was easier to use for this purpose.

With the main substance of the painting in place, Chris began to embellish with delicious detail bringing the scene to life. Glinting windows, bobbing buoys, masts and ropes all appeared.

Chris then placed a frame around his painting which immediately enhanced and elevated the already stunning work.

But he wasn't finished! Chris explained that he likes to review his paintings after a few days and add to it as needed.

After a week, we received a picture of the finished piece which I sure you will agree is fantastic.

Thank you, Chris, for a great afternoon and thank you to all the GAS members who attended.
